It's always hilarious when people defend their opinions as if they're under attack by subtext that they're imagining.

No one's going to shun you from society for not liking a 16-bit era RPG.

speaking of imaginary subtext.

Best game you personally don't like.

What's great about your post is where you first allege (without actually saying it) that people who don't like Chrono Trigger are somehow "making it up" so that they seem edgy or cool or whatever, and then prove this with the fact that it got re-released on the DS, as if that somehow makes it more popular and talked about now. By "great" I meant stupid of course because your argument is something only a moron would come up with, since Chrono Trigger was discussed way more when it first came out and when people still actually played the game, meaning that people would have had more opportunities back then to contrive their hatred for the game. I also love how you didn't even respond to my post where I pretty definitively showed that Chrono Trigger is a sucky game.

The reason people criticize hideously overrated games like Chrono Trigger or FF7 long after their release is because sometimes it's hard to realize that a game sucks when a) you were 10 when the game was made and b) when everyone around you thinks that the game is the hottest shit since sliced bread.

What's there to dislike about Chrono Trigger?
Possible spoilers etc:

The game is way too easy, not just because you basically breeze through the game never having to level up, but because all of the sidequests and shit are pretty much thrown directly at you so that you don't need to look around, or explore, or prod the game or otherwise stimulate your brain at all to discover any of the non-linearity in the game. I super especially hate how much they gave away the already kind of obvious quest with that stone that needed to be exposed to the sun for like 65002000 years (I forget most of the details but I know that it was horribly given away), where it's like "hmm... this needs to be exposed to something really hot... and really big... like THE SUN... and it needs to be done for a long time... like maybe SIXTY FIVE MILLION YEARS... or something".

the disappointment of Chrono Trigger is compounded by the fact that the time-travel aspect of the game (aka pretty much the whole game) was done terribly - almost nothing you do has that much of a "lasting" effect on the future, if I remember correctly even opening chests in the year 600 doesn't ruin them for the year 1000 - even if I'm wrong about that, my point is that there aren't enough consequences in the future for the things you do while you're in the past.

Don't get me wrong, some parts of the game are done very well - the Dark Age (12000 BC) world was very memorable for me and the game has a lot of very likable characters (it's not exactly difficult coming up with "stereotypical prehistoric character", "stereotypical future character", "stereotypical middle ages character", etc but whatever, that's irrelevant)
Out of curiosity, what 8/16-bit era RPGs do you like?

FF6, Robotrek, Pokemon, Earthbound, etc

The straight up BEST Final Fantasy

No but it did open them up to the mainstream consumer. Before FF7 came along RPGs were mostly for a select group, especially jRPGs. It opened the genre to the world in a large scale.

Honestly, I prefer the days when RPG's were for the elite and not just for every random loser with a playstation.

Worst videogame character.

Come to think of it, are we counting Hentai protagonists? I'd volunteer any protagonist of a loli hentai game.

hahahaha I love this response, this wins the thread for me, if not my heart.

The straight up BEST Final Fantasy

I "realize" it's a game with lots in common with VI, just not as good.

yeah, pretty much.

I know it's cool to hate FF7 because it's ridiculously overhyped, overrated, etc, but the game was/is amazing and was very important for the gaming industry, especially RPGs, whether you like it or not. =P

How exactly was it important for the gaming industry, apart from being financially successful? I don't think it really revolutionized RPG's if that's what you're saying.

The straight up BEST Final Fantasy

FF1 has the most replay value <3

I remember a time where everyone you'd talk to would say that 7 was indisputably the best and to think that 6 was better was just nuts. Either times have changed or this forum is full of people with super enlightened taste like mine. Anyways I like 6 the most but I haven't played tactics so I can't say whether it's the best or not.

Best FF for story: FF7

FF7's story is so asinine... mostly the subplots and random character development-related shit but even the main story is a bit silly. Like for the first half of the 1st disc it's not even clear at all why it's rational for the party to be following Sephiroth. They kind of forgot to put the plot in.

Best videogame character.

Birdo is my ultimate furry personally... oh wait this thread isn't about that

The website itself can't be sued because they aren't responsible for determining what's copyrighted and what isn't. I suppose the users who upload the songs may be liable but obviously getting them all would be freakishly impractical. Gotta love legal loopholes.
